GVM Upgrades

In New Zealand there are numerous industries that require vehicles to be loaded to the max with heavy tools etc. sometimes overloading vehicles and making them potentially dangerous and illegal if they breach the allocated gross vehicle mass (GVM).
The GVM is the maximum a vehicle can weigh when fully loaded. Everything you place on or in your vehicle adds to the overall GVM such as fuel, water/chemical tanks, a bull bar, tow bar, recovery gear, the tray body for cab chassis models and even your passengers.
All vehicles have a legal GVM as part of the vehicle manufacturer’s overall Australian Design Rules (ADR) approval. If your vehicle exceeds these limits you could be up for a costly fine, void your insurance conditions and make your vehicle unsafe.
To combat these issues, Old Man Emu offers GVM upgrades in line with ADR requirements for a number of new vehicles.
These new vehicle GVM upgrades are only granted by the Federal Department of Infrastructure and Transport after detailed tests have been carried out by Old Man Emu engineers. They ensure that the increase in a vehicle’s GVM following the fitment of a complete suspension system meets the minimum ADR safety requirements.
Unlike some of their competitors, all OME GVM upgrades are based on the combined front and rear axle loadings, as published by the vehicle manufacturer. This follows sound engineering principals by staying within the tested and proven capabilities that the vehicle manufacturers have established for their axles, thereby maintaining your vehicles reliability.
Once the approved OME suspension system and GVM upgrade compliance plates have been fitted to your vehicle by 4WD Solutions as authorised OME fitters, it can then be registered according to its new increased GVM. This process ensures that your vehicle is GVM legal in New Zealand.

The Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series is a large utility vehicle with high levels of off road ability and load carrying capability, ideally suited to heavy duty commercial uses. During development, OME engineers focussed on improving ride comfort, at an increased ride height, whilst maintaining load carrying ability and control.
Along with a new front shock and multiple front spring options to cater for differing vehicle setups, OME engineers also developed a sway bar spacer kit to maximise shock length and down travel, as well as an upgraded steering damper to reduce steering vibration. An optional upgraded front sway bar is also available to further enhance stability on vehicles regularly carrying heavy loads. With front ride height increases of approximately 50mm, a caster correction kit, which maintains factory steering geometry, was also developed.
Rear ride height increases of approximately 50mm maintain the factory vehicle rake and a large range of rear springs, with matching shocks and greasable shackles & pins, provide multiple options depending on the intended loads to be carried. An XL leaf has also been developed to assist with fine tuning the weight carrying capacity and matching spring bush kits ensure ease of service and increased bush life.
Other options include a heavy duty rear sway bar to improve stability in heavy loading situations, and separate spring bush kit for when original shackles are retained. To maintain correct front to rear brake pressure distribution, brake proportioning brackets have also been developed.
